Dr. Chowdhury Hafiz Ahsan secretary of BMANA California chapter and director of Cardiac Catheter lab and an Associate Professor of University of California Irvine went to Bangladesh twice this year. He performed many interventional procedures and trained few cardiologists at BIRDEM, Bangladesh. During his second visit he also took a vascular surgeon and a nurse from the University. The team’s performance was excellent in building a land mark collaboration in technology transfer. Dr. Chowdhury also sponsored a senior cardiologist who spent time at University of California Irvine as a visiting scholar under this program. Prof. Mohammed Sadduzzaman Chowdhury, M.D, Chief of Urology at NY medical College offered few weeks of training in advanced Urology at NY to 3 visiting Urologists from Bangladesh. Dr. Abidur Rahman, A vascular surgeon of Michigan has arranged training for a visiting Bangladeshi cardiovascular surgeon from NICVD, an anesthesiologist and a nurse. Dr. Rahman is involved in ongoing effort to train visiting Bangladeshi surgeons. Dr. Rafique Ahmed of Baltimore who had established cardiac Electrophysiology center at NICVD, Bangladesh, recently also arranged and hosted few weeks training of NICVD staff (an anesthesiologists, a charge nurse and a cardiologist) in Baltimore. Now he has another group receiving training in Baltimore. His ongoing effort to establish cardiac electrophysiology service in Bangladesh is a mile stone He is also arranging a seminar on Cardiology for general practitioners in Bangladesh. Dr. Ziauddin Ahmed successfully arranged the second international infection control seminar in Bangladesh in July 2006. The program was sponsored by Dr.Korzenewski memorial grant from Drexel University College Of Medicine. Other member of the team were Dr. Mohammed Malekuzzaman ( Program Coordinator) of NY, Dr. Mashiul Chowdhury of Drexel University Philadelphia, Dr. Mohammed Alam of NY and Dr. Reza Chowdhury of NY. The 3 day seminar was participated by more than two hundred physicians and nurses. Increased awareness in Infection control practices and management of infection in clinical practices was very encouraging. Ministry and DG of health and WHO office in Bangladesh offered excellent support and expressed great satisfaction at the out come of the seminar. The visiting team also organizing HIV management and other collaboration in the field. Dr. Nazmul Haq of Michigan is organizing an international seminar in Bangladesh. The seminar will be sponsored by Apollo Hospital. The 2 day seminar will be focusing on many subspecialties and will be participated by many US physicians. Dr. Bimalengshu Dey, a Harvard Oncologist will be organizing a 3 days International Cancer Seminar in Bangladesh on May 2007. The team will consists of few faculty from Harvard Medical School (MGH), Tata Memorial, India and Budapest Medical University , Hungary. He is planning to initiate a cancer care project in Bangladesh. BMANA oncology members are invited to organize the activities in the cancer care program. Dr. A. Ehsanul Hoque (Executive Director, DCI) of Connecticut has visited Bangladesh in the middle of December 2006 and had set up the infrastructure to initiate a Childhood Blindness Prevention Program in joint collaboration of DCI, Yale University and Diabetic Association of Bangladesh (DAB). In April 2007, Dr. Ehsan Hoque will again visit to Bangladesh with a Yale University Eye Surgeon team (headed by Dr. Brian DeBroff, a renowned Yale Eye surgeon) to organize several eye surgeries and training camps in Bangladesh. During the camps, the team will teach their modern pediatric eye surgery technique and will train a group of Bangladeshi eye surgeons. DCI would like to set up a continuous eye surgery facility in conjunction with DAB, Lion’s Eye Hospital and other eye hospitals. Eventually, they would also like to start collaborative research projects into new methods of prevention and treatment of congenital and developmental cataracts, including pediatric IOL implant technologies. Shahid Aziz,M.D., an ENT faculty of New Jersey Medical School and Dentistry with his team is going back to Bangladesh to work with Impact Foundation Bangladesh. His team consists of 14 people, including Surgeons, Surgery residents, Anesthesiologists, and nurses. They plan to do 70 cases of cleft lip/palate during these two weeks of trip. They will perform surgery week in rural medical center in Chuadanga and second week in their hospital ship Jibon Tri. Reaz Chowdhury,M.D. a gastroenterologist gave talks to BSSMU ( PG) and Dhaka medical during his visit in December 2006. His talk was highly appreciated and CME effort of BMANA was applauded. He is planning to organize a hands on training workshop on therapeutic endoscopy in Bangladesh in 2007. GI specialists are invited to participate in the program Mahfuzur Rahman,M.D. Chief of gastroenterology of Eastern North Carolina University has procured few endoscopy instruments for donation to BongoBndhu SK Mujib Medical University for training. The University is seeking support in donation of equipment and training. Nazneen Ahmed, M.D. a gastroenterologist from Chicago visited Bangladesh on December 2006 and gave lectures in DMC, Appolo Hospital, ICDDRB, Chicago Chapter president Dr. Zahirul Haq and secretary Dr. Abdur Razzak had arranged a reception for Dr. Parveen Kumar and Dr. Miler two Professor of Royal College of London who are authors of main Medicine text book and also go to Bangladesh as FCPS examiners. Mohammed Badruddozza, M.D a retired surgeon from Chicago and Past president of BMANA was a invited speaker at Canadian Human Right Commission, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. On the topic “HUMAN RIGHT AND DEMOCRACY IN BANGLADESH”. Dr. Badruddoza now is very active with human right issue. Mohammed Badruzaman,M.D. a renown pathologist in USA, a faculty of NY medical College and past president of BMANA will be doing his sixth hands on pathology conference in May, 2007 in Bangladesh. He will be accompanied by two of his former residents Dr. Humayun Islam of NY medical college and Dr. Monwar Hussain of Nova Scotia, Canada .The 4 days seminar will be held at Dhaka Medical College. It is sponsored by Bangladesh Society of Pathology and Pathology department of Dhaka Medical College. Dr. Badruzzaman’s continuous and sustained effort over the years to improve the standard of pathology in Bangladesh became an excellent model and earned enormous appreciation. Dr. Nazmul Khan, Secretary of BMANA was invited along with President of American Bangladeshi Engineers in a forum organized by Sylhet Sadar Somity fair in NY in September 2006. The activities and future agenda of BMANA and Engineers Association were presented in the presence of about 5 thousands audiences. BMANA NY chapter sponsored and participated in organizing the grand reception given to Dr. Mohammed Yunus, the Noble peace prize recipient in New York on November 2006. American Bangladeshi Engineers had invited some leaders of BMANA to their convention in NY in November 2006. A discussion was held to initiate joint projects in Bangladesh. Few years ago BMANA had initiated an effort to organize Dentists, Pharmacists and Engineers of Bangladeshi origin for joint ventures. The effort had encouraged Dental and Engineers association to exchange ideas and representation to the meetings. Editorial BMANA needs your participation to grow into a strong platform where it can represent your agenda and turn your dream into a reality. The members can support in organizing the meeting, & supporting BMANA activities in Bangladesh and in USA. We need support in fundraising, new physician’s quest in getting residency, visa issue, job placement , research and clinical training and many more important agenda of BMANA.
